Solving Google Merchant Center Suspensions on Shopify
Shopify is user-friendly. Google is not. Here's why your apps and themes are getting you banned—and how to fix it.
The Shopify Paradox
Shopify powers over 4 million online stores as of 2026. It's incredibly user-friendly—but its ease of use and reliance on third-party apps creates a perfect storm for Google Merchant Center suspensions. Many merchants install their store, add popular apps, launch Google Shopping ads, and wake up to a suspension notice within days.
The challenge is that Shopify merchants often don't have direct access to the underlying code that's causing problems. When you install an app, it injects scripts and modifies your store's behavior in ways you can't easily see or control. A countdown timer app that seems harmless can trigger "Untrustworthy Promotions" violations. A currency converter can cause "Misrepresentation" suspensions for price inconsistencies.
This guide walks you through the most common Shopify-specific issues that trigger GMC suspensions, explains exactly why they're problematic, and shows you how to fix them.
The "Theme" Problem — Hidden Issues in Your Template
Shopify themes are beautifully designed templates that make your store look professional. However, many premium and free themes come with pre-installed content that violates Google's policies if you don't customize it properly.
Placeholder Text
When you install a new theme, it includes demo content—fake product descriptions, sample blog posts, example reviews, and footer text like "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet." If you don't remove every piece of this placeholder content, Google's AI will flag your store as unprofessional or potentially fraudulent.
Check These Locations:
- • Footer text and copyright notices
- • About Us and Contact pages
- • Product descriptions (especially sample products)
- • Blog posts created by the theme
- • Meta descriptions and page titles in SEO settings
Social Media Icons Linking Nowhere
Many themes include social media icons by default, but these icons link to generic URLs like "facebook.com" or "instagram.com" rather than your actual business profiles.
Rule: Either link icons to your real social media pages or remove them entirely. Having placeholder links is worse than having no links at all—it suggests you're using a template without customizing it.
Fake Reviews and Testimonials
Some themes include fake customer reviews or testimonials as demonstration content. These might appear on your homepage or product pages, showing five-star ratings and glowing comments from fictional customers.
Immediate suspension: If Google detects fake reviews on your site, it's considered deceptive practices. Go through every page and remove all demo reviews, testimonials, and trust badges that aren't authentic.
The "App" Problem — When Helpful Tools Trigger Bans
Shopify's app ecosystem is both its greatest strength and a major source of compliance problems. Apps extend functionality, but they also inject code into your site that can violate Google's policies without your knowledge.
Countdown Timer Apps
Apps that create "evergreen" countdown timers—timers that reset for each visitor or show the same countdown every day—violate Google's prohibition on false scarcity tactics.
How It Gets You Banned:
You set "Sale ends in 2 hours!" at the top of your site. But this timer doesn't correspond to a real sale deadline—it just shows 2 hours to every visitor, then resets when they come back tomorrow.
Google considers this manipulative and deceptive because you're creating fake urgency to pressure customers.
Safe Alternatives:
- Countdown to actual fixed-date events (Black Friday ends at midnight)
- Daily shipping cutoff timers ("Order in 4 hours for same-day shipping")
- Generic "evergreen" timers that create artificial urgency
Currency Converter Apps
Currency converters that automatically display prices in the visitor's local currency based on their IP address seem like a great idea for international stores. Google explicitly prohibits this.
Your product feed lists prices in a specific currency for a specific target country. When Google's crawlers visit your site to verify those prices, they need to see exactly what's in the feed. If a currency converter shows different prices to visitors from different countries, Google sees a mismatch and suspends you.
Reported Problematic Apps: "Orbe Geolocation" and similar multi-currency converters. Use Shopify Markets with separate product feeds for each target country instead.
Inventory Scarcity Apps
Apps that display "Only 3 left in stock!" or "5 people viewing this product" can trigger false scarcity violations if the numbers aren't accurate. Some apps show fake low stock warnings regardless of actual inventory, or display made-up "people viewing" counts.
Google's algorithms can detect when these numbers are manipulated, especially when they compare your app's claims against your actual inventory data in your product feed.
Aggressive Pop-up Apps
Pop-ups that appear immediately when someone lands on your page and block access to product information violate Google's content accessibility policies.
- Pop-ups that appear immediately on page load
- "Spin the Wheel" with deceptive language
- Pop-ups requiring email before viewing products
- Delayed pop-ups that are easily dismissible
Feed Management and the Google & YouTube Channel App
Shopify's official Google & YouTube channel app is supposed to make Google Shopping integration seamless, but it has several documented bugs and limitations that cause ongoing problems in 2026.
GTIN Handling Issues
Multiple merchants report that the app doesn't correctly sync GTIN information. Products with valid GTINs entered in the "Barcode" field still show "Missing value [GTIN]" errors in Merchant Center.
Workaround: Use third-party feed apps like AdNabu, Simprosys Google Shopping Feed, or DataFeedWatch instead of (or in addition to) the official app.
Shipping Configuration Limitations
The Google & YouTube app only syncs shipping rates from your "General" shipping profile. If you use custom shipping profiles for specific products or locations, those rates won't sync correctly—creating mismatches between your feed and checkout.
Third-party shipping apps (like Intuitive Shipping) and carrier-calculated rates also don't sync automatically. You'll need to manually configure shipping in Merchant Center.
Product Sync Delays (24-48 Hours)
When you update a product price or mark something as out of stock, it can take 24-48 hours to reflect in Merchant Center. During that window, you're advertising outdated information, which can lead to price mismatch violations. Consider using the Content API for real-time updates on high-velocity products.
Shopify Checkout and Policy Configuration
Guest Checkout
Enabled by default in Shopify—don't disable it or install apps that force account creation.
Back Button Functionality
Ensure the browser back button works throughout checkout. Some themes/apps disable it to prevent cart abandonment—this violates policy.
Legal Policy Templates
Shopify provides templates under Settings > Policies, but they contain placeholder text like "[Add your refund policy here]". Delete all instructional text and customize with your actual business details.
Tax/VAT Settings
EU: "Prices include tax" must be enabled. US: Tax added at checkout. Mismatched tax handling between product pages and checkout is a common Misrepresentation trigger.
