Shopify + Google Merchant Center suspended — how to fix it
The suspension is real, but the causes are Shopify-specific — and every one of them is fixable from your admin.
If your Shopify store just got the email "Your Merchant Center account has been suspended due to policy violation: Misrepresentation" — and the Google & YouTube app now shows a red account-issue banner — you are in the most common failure mode of the Shopify + Google Merchant Center setup. Your Shopping ads stop, free listings disappear, and the app's diagnostics tell you almost nothing. The suspension is real, but the cause is nearly always something specific to how Shopify builds your store and your feed, and every one of those causes is fixable from your Shopify admin.
None of this means Shopify is a bad platform for Google Shopping — it means the defaults need attention. The Google & YouTube app builds your feed automatically from product data you may never have reviewed, your theme may ship with countdown and low-stock widgets already enabled, and Shopify generates policy pages that stay invisible until you link them. Google's reviewer does not know or care that an app made these choices; they judge the storefront exactly as they find it.
When Google reviews a Shopify store, it compares three things: the data in your feed, the rendered product page a shopper sees, and the trust signals around the purchase — policies, contact details, and the domain the checkout actually runs on. Shopify sits between you and all three. A sale that ends in your admin but lingers in the feed, a checkout that jumps to yourstore.myshopify.com, or a geo-converted price all register as mismatches, and mismatches are what Misrepresentation enforcement runs on.
The fastest way out is knowing which of these triggers fired on your store. Our free AI audit loads your live Shopify storefront the way a Google reviewer does — screenshots included — and flags the exact pages, apps, and feed mismatches behind the suspension, then generates a paste-ready appeal letter. The steps below cover every Shopify-specific cause so you can work through them in your admin.

- The Google & YouTube app syncs your catalog automatically, but sync is not instant. End a sale in your admin and the feed can keep advertising the discounted price for hours; Google fetches your product page, sees a higher price than the feed claims, and logs a price mismatch — the classic on-ramp to a Misrepresentation suspension.
- Shopify's compare-at price field creates the struck-through "was" price on every product page. If you set it as a permanent pricing tactic — the item never actually sold at the higher number — Google's reviewer sees a fake discount running storewide. Fabricated reference prices are named explicitly in the Misrepresentation policy.
- Countdown timer and low-stock apps — and the urgency sections built into many popular themes — render "Only 3 left!" badges and resetting sale timers on every visit. A reviewer who reloads the page and watches the timer restart has direct evidence of fake urgency, one of the most cited Misrepresentation triggers on Shopify stores.
- Shopify generates refund, privacy, and terms pages at /policies/ URLs when you fill in Settings > Policies — but it does not link them anywhere. Unless you add them to your footer menu under Online Store > Navigation, a reviewer landing on a product page finds no reachable return or shipping policy, which reads as a store hiding its terms.
- Your feed and ads point to your custom domain, but the store still resolves — or checks out — on yourstore.myshopify.com because the custom domain was never set as primary under Settings > Domains. Google treats a shopper being moved between two domains mid-purchase as an identity inconsistency, and it can also break the domain claim in Merchant Center.
- Shopify Markets geo-converts prices and currencies automatically. If your feed targets the US in USD but a reviewer's fetch triggers a different market — or rounding rules nudge converted prices — the landing page no longer matches the feed. Repeated price and currency mismatches escalate from item disapprovals into account-level enforcement.
- The app can push every size and color variant as its own offer with the same title, image, and description — and sometimes the same GTIN. To Google this looks like duplicate listings gaming the auction, and shared identifiers across variants trigger item conflicts that pile up in the diagnostics until the account looks systematically messy.
How to fix each trigger in your Shopify admin
- 1Run the free audit before touching settings
Find out which triggers actually fired. The audit loads your live storefront the way a Google reviewer does, screenshots your product pages, checkout path, and footer, and cross-checks them against the Misrepresentation signals above. You get a ranked list of the exact pages, apps, and mismatches to fix — which matters, because appealing after fixing the wrong thing burns an appeal attempt.
- 2Link every policy page in your footer menu
Go to Settings > Policies and complete the refund, shipping, privacy, and terms of service fields — Shopify publishes each at a /policies/ URL. Then open Online Store > Navigation, edit your footer menu, and add all four pages plus your contact page. Load a product page in an incognito window and confirm each link works. Google checks that these policies are reachable from the pages in your feed, not just that they exist.
- 3Remove scarcity apps, timers, and fake discounts
Audit your Apps list and your theme sections for countdown timers, low-stock counters, and sales-pop notifications, then uninstall or disable them — including leftover app embeds under Online Store > Themes > Customize > App embeds. Clear compare-at prices on any product that never genuinely sold at the higher figure. Reload your product pages twice: if any timer resets or a stock badge never changes, it is still a flag.
- 4Set your custom domain as primary and re-claim it
In Settings > Domains, make your custom domain the primary domain and enable the redirect from yourstore.myshopify.com. Then confirm the same domain is verified and claimed in Merchant Center — the Google & YouTube app usually handles this, but a claim sitting on the wrong domain silently breaks everything. Every URL in your feed, your checkout, and your ads should now sit on one consistent domain.
- 5Align Shopify Markets with your feed targeting
Open Settings > Markets and check which countries and currencies are active. If you only advertise in the US, either deactivate other markets or make sure the Google & YouTube app targets only markets whose currency matches the feed. Spot-check a product page as a visitor from your target country: the visible price, currency, and shipping cost must match what the feed reports for that country.
- 6Clean up the feed in the Google & YouTube app
In the app, review product status and fix what it reports: exclude duplicate variants (or give each variant its own image and correct GTIN), remove discontinued items, and confirm prices synced after your latest changes. If a sale just ended, force a re-sync and wait for the feed to refresh before requesting any review — appealing while the feed still shows stale prices guarantees a rejection.
- 7Fix your contact page, then request review from Merchant Center
Replace a bare app-generated contact form with a page that shows a real email on your own domain, a phone number, and your business address — matching the details in Merchant Center's business information. Then request the review from Merchant Center itself (Account issues > Request review), not the Shopify app banner, and paste an appeal that lists each fix. The audit generates that letter for you, referencing the specific issues found on your store.

Frequently asked questions
Why was my Shopify store suspended in Google Merchant Center?
Almost always Misrepresentation: something on your storefront or in your feed looks misleading or inconsistent to Google. On Shopify the usual culprits are feed prices that lag behind page prices, scarcity apps, policy pages missing from the footer menu, a myshopify.com domain mismatch, or currency conversion from Shopify Markets. The platform is allowed; the defaults are what get flagged.
Does the Google & YouTube app cause suspensions?
The app itself is compliant, but its automation can create suspension triggers: delayed price syncs after a sale, every variant pushed as a duplicate offer, or a feed built before your policies and contact details were finished. Treat the app's sync as something to verify — check that what it sends matches your live pages — rather than something to trust blindly.
Where are my policy pages in Shopify, and why can't Google find them?
Shopify creates them automatically at /policies/refund-policy (and equivalents) once you fill in Settings > Policies — but it never links them on the storefront. Google's reviewer only counts a policy that is reachable from your pages, so you must add each one to the footer menu under Online Store > Navigation. Existing but unlinked equals missing.
Is my myshopify.com domain a problem for Merchant Center?
Only when it competes with your custom domain. Set the custom domain as primary in Settings > Domains so myshopify.com redirects to it, and make sure Merchant Center verifies and claims the custom domain. Running the feed on one domain while shoppers or the checkout land on the other reads as inconsistency and can break your domain claim.
Why does Google say my price doesn't match my product page?
Three Shopify-specific reasons: the Google & YouTube app synced before your latest price change, Shopify Markets is geo-converting the price Google's crawler sees into another currency, or a theme app displays a discounted price the feed doesn't know about. Fix the source, force a re-sync, and confirm the page and feed show the identical price and currency.
Should I delete my scarcity and countdown apps completely?
If the urgency they display is not literally true, yes. A timer that resets on refresh or a permanent "Only 2 left!" badge is direct evidence under the Misrepresentation policy, and reviewers reload pages to check. Honest urgency — a real sale with a real end date, actual stock counts — is allowed, but most Shopify urgency apps are not built that way.
Do I appeal from the Shopify app or from Merchant Center?
Request the review inside Google Merchant Center — open the account-level issue and use "Request review". The Google & YouTube app surfaces the suspension banner, but the appeal itself runs through Google's review flow. Only submit after every fix is live and the feed has re-synced; a rejected appeal adds a cooldown before you can try again.
How long does reinstatement take for a Shopify store?
Typically within about a week of a clean request — Google states reviews can take up to seven business days, sometimes longer during busy periods. The timeline depends far more on whether the real triggers were fixed than on the platform. Shopify stores that fix the feed, policies, and domain in one pass and then appeal once tend to clear review fastest.
